Best Games for Converting Non-Gamers in 2026

Updated for 2026! What are the best games for getting non-gamers to the table?

My go-to list:

  1. Azul — gorgeous, tactile, simple rules, deep strategy
  2. Wingspan — theme sells it, gameplay keeps them
  3. Ticket to Ride — the classic for a reason
  4. Cascadia — puzzley, non-confrontational, beautiful
  5. The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth — engine building 101

What would you add or change?

I'd swap Ticket to Ride for **Carcassonne**. It's easier to teach ("place a tile, put a dude on it") and the spatial element is more intuitive than route planning.

**Kingdomino** deserves a spot. 15-minute games, everyone understands dominoes, and it looks great on the table.

Carcassonne gang rise up! It's been my #1 gateway for 15 years and it never fails. The farmer scoring is the only tricky part.

Where's Catan on this list? It literally converted more people than any other game in history.

@NotJustCatan Catan was the gateway of the 2000s-2010s. The games on this list do what Catan does but better, with less "I have wood for sheep" randomness frustration.
