Kickstarter FOMO Is Ruining This Hobby

I’m so tired of the cycle: massive KS campaign → FOMO → $150 pledge → 18 months of waiting → game arrives → play twice → shelf of shame.

I’ve backed 23 Kickstarters in 3 years. I regret maybe 18 of them. The retail editions are almost always fine. The “exclusives” are almost always unnecessary.

Am I alone in this or are others waking up to the KS hype machine?

You are not alone. My shelf of shame is 70% Kickstarter games. I've started a personal rule: no backing until I've watched at least 3 independent reviews (not paid previews).

The "exclusives" thing drives me insane. They're deliberately creating artificial scarcity to extract maximum dollars from FOMO. It's predatory.

Counterpoint: KS has funded games that would never exist through traditional publishing. The problem isn't the platform — it's backing every shiny campaign.

I back 1-2 per year now, strictly from designers I trust. That's it. Quality over quantity.

The real trick is waiting for the retail release and buying at 30% off on an online sale. Patience pays.

Update: I just backed another one. I have no self-control. But this one looks REALLY good I swear.
