Kickstarter Regrets: Games That Weren't Worth the Wait

Over three years I’ve backed 19 games on Kickstarter. Of those: 4 were great, 6 were fine, 5 are still in shrink, 2 were bad, 2 still haven’t shipped.

The “exclusive KS content” is almost always unnecessary stretch goals. The “you’ll never get this at retail” stuff shows up at retail six months later for less.

Anyone else hit their Kickstarter breaking point?

Backed a dungeon crawler in 2022. Minis looked microwaved. Gameplay was mediocre. $150 shelf ornament.

My rule: never back a first-time designer with no review copies sent out. Minis are not gameplay.

Mechs vs. Minions proved big-box production games CAN be incredible. The problem isn't crowdfunding, it's selling hype over design.

I added up my KS spend last year. I could have bought a used car. A bad one, but still.

Worst part: when the game ships 18 months late and you've forgotten what it is. You open the box and feel nothing.
