Puerto Rico: Wharf first — genius or clown move

Last night I grabbed Wharf early because I had a harbor dream and a corn board that looked like a golden child. Ended up feeding everyone else’s Captain picks while I waited for my engine to wake up.

Classic ‘I read strategy posts but cant play the table’ energy.

Is Wharf-first ever correct without already having solid goods production, or is that just me being greedy for flexibility?

Also yes I know Puerto Rico is old. It’s new to us because we finally stopped being snobs about older euros.
