I love Spirit Island. It’s probably my #1 game. But I’ve played it so much solo that I need something new.
What I like about Spirit Island solo: meaningful decisions, escalation, thematic immersion, and barely pulling off a win.
What I DON’T want: games where solo mode is just “play two-handed and pretend you have friends.”
Budget isn’t an issue. Table space is (NYC apartment). Hit me.
Mage Knight. Yes the setup is horrendous. Yes it takes 3 hours. But once it clicks? Best solo game ever made.
Ark Nova solo is genuinely excellent. The opponent AI is simple to run and you can finish in under 90 minutes.
Gloomhaven running two characters solo. Yes it's a lot of overhead. Yes I have a spreadsheet. No I will not apologize.
Pax Pamir solo with the Wakhan AI is a legitimate opponent that makes genuinely surprising moves.
Ok Mage Knight is going to the top of the list. I had no idea Pax Pamir had a solo mode — that's incredibly appealing.
